Purpose - This community engagement activity aimed to strengthen participants’ capacity to write news reports, articles, and opinion pieces within the context of electoral public communication at the General Election Commission (KPU) of Wonogiri Regency. The program was grounded in the need for electoral public communication that is accurate, verifiable, neutral, and accessible to the public.
Design/Methodology/Approach- The training was conducted face-to-face in a single session in 2026 and consisted of initial needs mapping, interactive presentations, analysis of writing examples, guided practice, and reflective discussions. Data sources included facilitator notes, training materials, activity documentation, participants’ responses during discussions, and exercises involving headlines, leads, opening paragraphs, argumentation, and information sources. The data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach focusing on the distinction among writing genres, completeness of the 5W+1H elements, source verification, and the separation of facts from opinions.
Findings - The available evidence indicates that the activity provided a structured environment for writing practice and directed participants’ attention to accuracy, verification, writing structure, and institutional neutrality. The training also facilitated participants’ understanding of the different characteristics of news reports, articles, and opinion pieces within electoral public communication. However, improvements in writing competence could not be quantified because the activity did not include a pre-test, post-test, scoring rubric, or complete participant attendance records.
Originality/Value - The program’s principal contribution lies in contextualizing writing skills within the specific requirements of institutional electoral public communication. Rather than focusing solely on technical writing skills, the program integrated principles of accuracy, verification, neutrality, and the distinction between facts and opinions. It also generated recommendations for follow-up activities, including editorial clinics and the development of internal writing guidelines to support the continuous improvement of public communication quality at the KPU of Wonogiri Regency.
